DR. ANDREW BLACKWOOD - "Negative What Ifs" | Mental Health Moment
Mental Health Moments • 1m 51s
It’s the time of year when the temperature changes and sinus challenges flair up. My daughter was having a difficult time with breathing clearly and was worried that she wouldn’t be able to breathe, at all. “What if I can’t breathe through my mouth anymore, what if I stop breathing in my sleep, what if I die and can’t see you anymore?”
Have you ever had a series of negative what-if thoughts? I have, they tend to lead us to panic. This is another one of the Big 5 anxiety provoking thoughts.
Isn’t it interesting that even though these thoughts aren’t real, our bodies react as if they are. This is why it’s important to breathe, bring calm to our bodies and then change the channel by thinking about other possible outcomes, good outcomes, decent outcomes, incredible outcomes.
When you find yourself in a spiral of negative what if’s, just ask yourself, what if it happens differently, what if God has a plan? What if God intends to work even this out for my good.
And we know that all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose.
Think about then what the negative what-ifs pop into your mind.

Just the other day, I came home to my daughter, who was a ball of tears. Daddy, I am so sorry. I used the sharp knife when you told me not to and I cut myself. I’m sorry I am going back to my room now.”
It turns out that even though...
