DR. ANDREW BLACKWOOD - "Managing Moods" | Mental Health Moment
Mental Health Moments • 1m 50s
Feeling down, sad, hopeless, it’s not fun, is it?
Over the years, I’ve learned and relied on several strategies to impact change in my mood and I want to support you to do the same.
If I had the time, I’d share them all with you, but I’ll tell you one of my favourites. It’s called tolerance. Most of the time, we want to escape unpleasant emotions. They don’t feel good, so we condition ourselves to avoid them. In fact, sometimes, we’re so afraid to feel unpleasant emotions that we teach our selves that we can’t handle them.
The truth is, you can. Learning to breathe through them, sends a message to the parts of brain that tells us to run from them, after a while, we actually start to believe that we can handle it.
Only then, can we truly access our strengths and God-given wisdom to deal with our own thoughts and our situations.
Quite often we think the situation has to change in order for us to have peace, but Jesus demonstrated otherwise on the Sea of Galilee. Even though he told the winds and waves to be still, He didn’t need to calm the Storm on the outside, because there was peace on the inside. Tolerating our emotions helps us to be still, and like Jesus, we can experience peace, even in the middle of a storm.
