DR. ANDREW BLACKWOOD - "All or Nothing Thinking" | Mental Health Moment
Mental Health Moments • 1m 59s
Ever find yourself feeling down, terribly lonely, thinking that no one really cares. It’s hard to shake those feelings when you’re literally alone.
I can’t argue with how you feel, and I don’t suggest you argue with your emotions either, because it’s actually the thoughts that are contributing to how you feel. Yes, you may be alone right now, but is it 100% that no one cares, at all?
Words like “no one” never, always, they’re absolute and they do an amazing job of convincing us that no one cares at all, and that’s enough to make anyone feel terribly sad and alone.
No one, everyone, always, never, these words tell us we’re using an all or nothing pattern of thought. It’s one of the Big 5, as I like to call them.
These kinds of thoughts play out on the screen of our minds and fuel all sorts of unpleasant emotions. And, what we feel in our bodies, we tend to believe is real.
So, instead of dwelling on that idea, take a moment, breathe into that very place you feel the loneliness in your body and listen for what the God who cares for you says to you?
I am with you… He often reminds me. I am with you always, I will never leave you nor forsake you. Isn’t this a blessed consolation? Paul encourages us… Whatsoever things are true and of good report… think on these things… and the God of peace shall be with you. Let’s think on these things.

I am going to fail, I’m gonna fail… my sister would be so worried after an exam or submitting an assignment, only to ecstatically find, “Oh my God, I got an A!”
This happened for years!!!! Regardless of how many times things worked out, she worried that they wouldn’t.

Daddy, I didn’t tell you because you’re going to be so mad.
Just the other day, I came home to my daughter, who was a ball of tears. Daddy, I am so sorry. I used the sharp knife when you told me not to and I cut myself. I’m sorry I am going back to my room now.”
It turns out that even though...
