Elizabeth Banducci
Greater Toronto Area teen Elizabeth Banducci took on the biggest challenge of her young life on August 24, 2019 when she swam across Lake Erie to raise funds for her favorite cause. Banducci, a 17-year-old competitive swimmer from Brampton, Ontario, has been training hard for the last nine months and felt ready to conquer the Great Lake and the many rigors of the long distance, open water swim. The swim was 20 kilometers in length, across Lake Erie. She entered U.S. waters this morning at 9:03 a.m. An exhilarated Banducci came ashore on the Canadian side at 4:09 p.m. Banducci completed the swim in just 7 hours and 6 minutes. She also succeeded in raising awareness and more than $12,200, and climbing, for her favorite charity, Defend Dignity, a registered Canadian charity focused on fighting human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and youth.
Glendyne Gerrard
Defend Dignity is a ministry of The Christian and Missionary Alliance (The C&MA). Defend Dignity’s mission is to end all forms of sexual exploitation in Canada. We accomplish this through focusing on Awareness and education, Advocacy for law and policy reform, and Aid to survivors. It began in 2010 under the banner of National Women’s Ministries as a call to address a justice issue in Canada facing women. In 2012 it became apparent that the issue of sexual exploitation is an issue for everyone, not just women. At this point Defend Dignity became a stand-alone ministry department at The C&MA. Glendyne helped to found Defend Dignity and has served as the Director since it began. She works with a team of volunteer leaders across Canada as well as many survivors of sexual exploitation. Glendyne is married to Douglas, Executive Vice President of The C&MA. They have 3 married children and 8 grandchildren. www.defenddignity.ca
