If your heart is racing with anxiety, fear and panic, I’m going to share what is standing between you and peace.
I do a great deal of work with parents and their children who are dealing with anxiety, and there is a profound secret to experiencing the peace of God that is just as true for adults as it is for children:
Only a calm body can hold onto calming thoughts.
Whenever we imagine unpleasant things about the future, we will feel anxious.
Like you, I have unhelpful thoughts on a daily basis. One of the quickest ways to shift from imagining unhelpful things is to bring your attention to your breathing. You can do it with me right now, in through the nose and out through the mouth.
Breathing like this will shift your attention, relieve tension and bring fresh oxygen to your brain which will help you to feel calm. Then you can be intentional about what you meditate on.
We are given great advice in Psalm 1:2, we are to delight in the Law of the LORD, and we get to meditate day and night on his unchanging and wonderful ways.
I encourage you to take a moment to be still, to invite His presence in with every breath. And if your mind returns to upsetting things, remind yourself that only a calm body can hold onto calming thoughts.
